Unlike 2nd level domains, subdomains do not require registration and assignment operations by a Registration Authority. In fact, the subdomains reside within the main domain name and for their creation there are no limitations or constraints on the choice of name: The assignee of a 2nd level domain can create unlimited subdomains for free! Why create a subdomain? Even though it resides within the main domain name, a subdomain is a domain in its own right.
